In Himmel über Düsseldorf – Engel II, a shop window in the middle of the city serves as a glass membrane between stage and auditorium, inside and outside, private and public. The audience sits in the shop window and follows the action on the street. Outside, four performers hold dialogues with their own reflection in the glass. A sound system transmits their words inside. Passers-by actively become the backdrop for the play, sometimes as co-actors, and thus influence its course – theatre can hardly be more public. In the course of the performance, individual stories interweave to form a many-voiced choir of angels, from which the longings and goals of modern city dwellers resound. Each performance is unique: the piece inhales the breath of the city and changes constantly. The only constant is the four protagonists in front of the window pane: there is an estate agent who, between success and emotional vacancy, no longer knows where she belongs. A small shop owner who is at the end of her tether in times of liberal shop opening hours and open Sundays. A bicycle courier who knows her city better than she knows herself, who can smell the fine dust and names the building sites. And a craftsman who explains his world mathematically and thereby not only recalculates his existence.…
